American interest in the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier started to take off in the early 1970’s, with the largest groups of breeders and exhibitors concentrated in the Middle Atlantic States.  The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America was founded on March 17, 1962 paving the way for local clubs to be formed to encourage new owners, breeders and exhibitors.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Metropolitan New York held it’s first fun match in Rockville Center on March 22, 1970.  In 1971 a group of Wheaten fanciers were gathering to start a club in the Doylestown, Pennsylvania vicinity and decided to call it the Delaware Valley Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club.   Del Val hosted its first fun match in Merion, PA on September 23, 1972 with an entry of 22 puppies and 26 adults.  (continued below)

For the following two years the Metro Club and Del Val took turns hosting AKC approved matches in order to qualify the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America to hold a national specialty.  Only member clubs of the AKC are approved to hold breed specialties, and only after holding four matches.

The Delaware Valley Soft Coated Wheaten Club was eligible to hold its first specialty on February 12, 1983 with an entry of 33 in Sweeps and 77 in the regular classes.  Unfortunately a Nor-Easter blew into town with several feet of snow and, while the show did go on, it was greatly diminished by the weather.  Del Val specialties are held in conjunction with the Bucks County Kennel Club in May, a much more considerate month for weather conditions in Pennsylvania.  DelVal “B” matches are usually held in the month of September.

The Delaware Valley Club is the oldest existing local club since Metro dissolved and is holding its own because of a few hard working individuals.  Several of the founding members are still very involved and there is a great working base of new people joining the ranks.   The club has a very popular specialty in May and enjoys other activities throughout the year.  Members have been active in sheep herding and DelVal will hold the first AKC approved herding event for the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier in April of 2011.  Other activities include grooming events and seasonal parties.
